However, sugar is not just an issue for people with sugar intolerance. New studies show that sugar consumption is unhealthy for everyone. It is bad for your teeth and the rest of your body. Sugar will help to rot your teeth because it provides fuel for the bad bacteria that lives in your mouth. Added sugar is known as empty calories because it provides no nutritional value. It just helps to decay your teeth.
Recently, a lot of information has been released about the connection between obesity and excess sugar intake. The problem with sugar is not just linked to those that are obese. Normal weight individuals are also at risk of developing serious health conditions, including heart disease, if they consume excess sugar.
In a study that took place over a 15-year period, the more sugar in a person’s diet (regardless of gender, weight and other stats), the more likely the person was to die from heart disease. By contrast, those that consumed very little added sugar also significantly cut their risk of dying from a heart-related illness.
The main culprit of added sugar in the diet comes from soda and sugary drinks, but sweet treats like cake, cookies and candy are also to blame.
Nutritionists have long said that sugar is responsible for cavities and weight gain. Furthermore, consuming sugar means that you might be excluding healthy calories from fruits and vegetables in your diet. While fruit contains sugar, it also contains nutrients, vitamins and minerals and is not considered an “empty” form of nutrition.
Ingesting too much sugar doesn’t just put you at a higher risk of heart disease; it wreaks havoc on other systems in the body as well:
- Your liver: When your body has too much sugar or fructose, the only organ that can deal with it is the liver. Excessive sugar consumption can lead to liver damage if it is under too great a strain processing all that sweet stuff.
- Affects your hormones, causing weight gain: Have you ever noticed that the more sugar you eat, the more you want to eat? This is because fructose tricks your body into thinking that you are still hungry. Sugar does not stimulate insulin production, which means that ghrelin, or “the hunger hormone,” remains turned on so leptin, “the satiety hormone,” is never triggered. Eventually, you can develop insulin resistance.
- Greater risk for metabolic syndrome: This includes being pre-diabetic and suffering from weight gain, abdominal obesity, lower HDL cholesterol and raised LDL cholesterol levels, higher blood sugar, raised triglycerides and high blood pressure.
