We all get cravings for something to munch on during the day. Whether it is a mid-day meal or midnight snack, there are certain foods that tide us over in between breakfast, lunch and dinner. What do you reach for when the hunger pangs hit? If it’s greasy potato chips, consider something healthier as an alternative. The following is a list of five healthy snacks that are low in calories and filled with vitamins and minerals.

1. Trail Mix

From trail mixes with dried fruit to shelled and roasted pistachios, you simply cannot go wrong with nuts and fruit. You can find a wide variety of cashews, pistachios, peanuts and almonds that contain healthy sources of fat, such as mono- and polyunsaturated fats, protein, vitamins and minerals.

2. Greek Yogurt

Dietitians and health gurus recommend yogurt as another go-to snack. Whether you want to start the day off right or you are in-between meals, grab a plain Greek yogurt to satisfy your hunger. Low in carbs and high in protein, this type of yogurt is perfect for weight control.

3. Granola Bars

Granola bars are simple snacks that are packed with protein and nutrients and come in a variety of flavors. Granola bars may also be combined with yogurt and fruit for a flavorful snack at any time, day or night.

4. Hummus

Make sure you snag some single-servings of hummus, which come in a wide variety of flavors, the next time you go grocery shopping. Made with chick peas, sesame seed paste, olive oil and garlic, this dip goes great with crackers or pita bread. This Middle Eastern snack has heart-healthy, unsaturated fats and is a good source of fiber, and also contains several vitamins and minerals.

5. Dark Chocolate

You can treat yourself while still eating healthy. Doctors say that dark chocolate may actually have some health benefits, so an occasional small serving is a good way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Cocoa, an ingredient in dark chocolate, comes from the cocoa bean which is high in flavonoids and are known to have antioxidant properties that help protect and repair our cells. So if you are feeling down and need a pick-me-up, take a couple of bites out of a dark chocolate bar to put a smile back on your face.
